Understand every practical way to travel in the Maldives, from airport taxis and local ferries to resort speedboats and domestic flights.
Maldives transportation is a combination of sea, air, and road travel. The best option depends on whether you are going to a nearby resort, a local island, or an atoll several hundred kilometres from Velana International Airport.
The main Maldives transfer options
- Resort speedboats connect nearby islands directly with the airport and operate well into the evening.
- Public ferries are affordable for selected local-island routes, but schedules are less frequent.
- Seaplanes serve distant resorts during daylight hours and offer the classic aerial view of the atolls.
- Domestic flights connect the capital with regional airports, usually followed by a short speedboat ride.
- Cars, taxis, buses, and private vans are useful for airport transfers around Malé and Hulhumalé.
How to choose
Start with your destination and arrival time. Nearby resorts and Maafushi are usually simplest by speedboat. Remote resorts may require a seaplane or domestic flight, while guests staying in Malé or Hulhumalé should book a road transfer across the airport bridge.
